What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral and maxillofacial surgery bridges medicine and dentistry. This type of surgery deals with problems and injuries of the teeth, mouth, jaws, and face. Some common procedures performed are wisdom teeth extraction, dental implants, bone grafting, anesthesia, sinus lifts, facial trauma, and pathology. Oral maxillofacial surgeons typically complete an extra four to six years of training in a hospital-based oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program after graduation from a four-year dental school.
